June 11, 2017 - Day #10 How much are the mangoes on your tree?

June 11, 2017

Aloha!

I can get used to this laid back lifestyle.  My internal alarm clock is still on California time so waking up early local time at 6am is not a problem.  David stopped by my villa to let me know that I'm in charge of the kids.  He is taking the adults to Chinatown to try the "Legendary Bao" that everyone is raving about.  I made my way to the main house around 8:30am and some of the kids were slowly waking up.  Breakfast requests were voiced and I told them that I'm not a short order chef and everyone's having ramen.  I cooked up 3 packs to make 6 bowls, added Kalua shredded pork, with kim chee on the side.  It was a breakfast for Champions!  I enjoyed a delicious fresh papaya.  Tiffanie called and told me that the Bao was horrible and wasn't going to bring any home.

Everyone arrived back home around 1pm.  Hanh and Young recruited kids to go back to Makapu'u Beach Park.  Mikey wanted to go but since I wasn't going, I insisted that he stayed home with me and go to a more kid friendly beach later.  He wasn't happy but safety was more important.  Only the big kids went so both Sam and Mikey was home.  I was looking at the tourist guide magazine and there was a chocolate factory here in Kailua that give tours.  My parents, Co Nhung, Tiffanie, and the little boys were reluctant to go but I made them.  Tiffanie dropped David and Ethan off at the golf course...his paradise.

Manoa Chocolate Factory was 5 mins away.  The staff was super friendly and gave us a personal tour and chocolate tasting.  Sam really enjoyed the Cacao tea and finished his, mine, and Grandma's.  We tried fresh roasted Cacao beans which was very bitter.  We sampled 9 different types of chocolate bars that they make locally.  The favorites were Hawaiian coffee (Dad and Tiffanie for David), Hawaiian Sea Salt (Sam and Co Nhung), Hawaiian Island Milk Chocolate (Tiffanie, Mikey, and Theresa).  Everyone enjoyed it so much and we bought $100 worth of chocolate.  The chocolate maker is a 30 year old and started the company at 24 years old.  He and his wife are so sweet, they even invited Sam and Mikey into the employees only roasting room.

I was going to Google Maps our way back to the rental but Tiffanie said that it wasn't necessary.  15 mins later, we drove in a big circle and ended back in front of the chocolate factory.  Since we forgot to get the Cacao tea for Sam, Tiffanie ran back into the store to get some.

Instead of going back home, we went on an adventure to find the fruiting mango tree that we passed so many times but couldn't quite remember the location.  After a few bum steer (Tiffanie again), it was just down the street from our rental!  Mom and Tiffanie knocked on the residential home and asked the owner if he is willing to sell.  He brought out a bag and a ladder and picked 9 large mangoes (that's as much as he can reach).  Mom offered him $20 but he said just $10.  Tiffanie gave him $15.  Everyone was happy!

We took the kids to Kailua Beach as promised.  It was crowded so we got there late in the afternoon.  Finding parking at 6pm was not a problem, most people were leaving.  Hanh's family wanted to recreate a picture that was taken 8 years ago.  We had to find the right tree.  The kids enjoyed the much calmer waves and catching crabs in the lagoon.

For dinner, Mom used the freshly picked mangoes to make a Mango Chicken Salad, roasted pork from Chinatown, and Kulua pork from Costco.  And for dessert, local chocolates and fruits.  Looks like we all can afford to lose some weight after this vacation.
