June 23, 2017 - Day #21 Lost in Subways
June 23, 2017
Today's destination - Incheon, Korea's largest Chinatown. Today was the day that we are reminded that it's the journey not the destination. Trying to navigate a foreign train system is not an easy task and doing it with two wheelchairs and 16 people is a challenge. We started out on the wrong train and needed to go back a few stops before getting back on track. (Thanks to Russell's neurotic map checking).
Incheon Chinatown is known for food such as sweet and sour pork, assorted seafood and vegetables with mustard sauce, jjajangmyeon (noodles with black soybean sauce), fortune cookies, mooncakes, and gongal breads (Pita Bread). Ben has family roots in Incheon and had lived in Korea in his early childhood. Ben wanted to eat Jjajangmyeon and found a restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. We ordered various sweet and sour dishes as well as different assortments of Jjajangmyeon. The sweet and sour stuff were ok to me. I did like the Jjajangmyeon. The noodles tasted homemade and was very filling. Matty liked it but preferred the one back home in San Ramon, Hung's Kitchen (which closed down since the owners retired).
We all walked around Chinatown, taking turns pushing wheelchairs up and down steep hills, and taking plenty of ice cream, snack, and drink stops. We took a break from the heat by visiting a Jjajangmyeon Museum (who knew there was a museum solely dedicated to this noodle dish?). We spent a good hour "learning" about the history of Jjajangmyeon before heading home on the subway. This time our trip was uneventful.
Dinner was at a Korean BBQ at a nearby restaurant. Greg found a more affordable place around the block. Even though most of the group said that they weren't hungry, we ate like it was our last meal. The BBQ in my opinion was fair, I still need to find amazing BBQ and will not leave Seoul until I find it.
